Activism
Here are some examples of my public activism work
In January of 2013, I created a Facebook event to show support for the Hobby Lobby company and its founders as they began a long fight with the Obama administration against the so-called "HHS Mandate" - the requirement that businesses provide contraceptive services in their health-plans for employees, even if the use of such was inimical to the beliefs of the owners of the company. The Facebook event went on to be a viral success (particularly after capturing the attention and support of Governor Mike Huckabee), with over 65,000 people eventually pledging their support on Facebook, and an reach on social media of several million impressions. The event was also covered widely in the Press, including by Fox News, LifeNews.com, The Christian Post, The Blaze, and Twitchy (although some reports were rather amusingly inaccurate). The event spawned an online community of several thousands, which I maintained for many months afterwards, using it as a place to provide updated information on the Hobby Lobby case until it was eventually won at the United States Supreme Court. |
After the successful Hobby Lobby initiative, I learned of a small organic foods company named EdenFoods, whose owner was a Catholic, which was also in a legal battle with the administration over the contraceptive mandate. The consumer base of EdenFoods was shocked and scandalized by the principled stand of the company's owner, and launched a boycott of the business which threatened to drastically hurt the small operation. I launched a website which I promoted through my Hobby Lobby support network. Although this endeavor was a modest success compared to the phenomenon of Stand With Hobby Lobby, the letter of support on the website did garner thousands of signatures, which I was able to pass on to Mr. Potter and his company as a show of support. The initiative also garnered some support and attention in the religious blogging community and I published an article on the matter on the web magazine, The Distributist Review, which cumulatively helped foster a healthy dialog within an important demographic about the continued threat of the HHS mandate. |
